BJD MLA Advocates for Reinstating Old Pension Scheme in Odisha

BJD MLA Ganeswar Behera urges reinstating Odisha's old pension scheme, citing financial losses under the new system and gaining broad support.

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : During the question hour in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, BJD MLA Ganeswar Behera vociferously advocated for the re-implementation of the old pension scheme for government employees in the state. Behera's appeal highlighted growing discontent among employees under the current pension system, which he claims is financially disadvantageous and fails to provide a comprehensive pension.

Concerns Over New Pension Scheme

Behera argued that the new pension scheme has resulted in significant financial losses for employees and does not guarantee a full pension. He asserted that reinstating the old pension scheme would offer substantial benefits to the employees, addressing their current economic concerns.

Widespread Support from Employees

The Odisha Old Pension Campaign organization, which represents approximately four lakh employees and their families, has expressed their profound gratitude towards Behera. The organization anticipates that other legislators will also recognize the issue's significance and advocate for discussions in the Assembly to support the reintroduction of the old pension scheme.

National Context and Comparative Analysis

In various states, elected representatives have presented data supporting the old pension scheme. States such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh have already implemented the scheme. Meanwhile, other states have established committees to facilitate its adoption. Despite these advancements in other regions, Odisha's employees remain disenfranchised by the absence of the old pension scheme, leading to widespread frustration and regret.

Call for Action

The Old Pension Campaign organization has formally requested the Chief Minister and the state government to take decisive action on this matter. Notable figures from the organization, including State President Vijay Mall, General Secretary Prayatna Baral, Gurugovind Dalai, Shubhranjit Pratihari, Rashmi Ranjan Padhy, Pradeep Pradhan, Prashant Rautaray, Antaryami Lenka, Shiva Shankar Sahu, and Babul Nayak, have emphasized the urgency of implementing the old pension scheme in a recent press release.

The situation underscores a growing demand for policy reconsideration and highlights the ongoing debate about pension reforms in Odisha.
