Odisha to Host State’s First Solar Energy Plant in Dhenkanal

Odisha's first solar energy plant, by Waaree Energies, promises a ₹25,000 crore investment, 6 GW output, and 14,000 jobs in Dhenkanal.

Dhenkanal, Odisha : In a significant step towards renewable energy adoption, Odisha is all set to establish its first solar energy plant in Neulpoi, located in the Dhenkanal Sadar block. Spearheaded by Waaree Energies Limited, Asia’s largest solar energy company, the project marks a monumental investment of ₹25,000 crore, setting the stage for economic and environmental progress in the region.

A ceremonial ground-breaking event was conducted at the site, with Odisha’s Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, laying the foundation stone. The initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Developed India" agenda and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi’s aspirations for a progressive Odisha, Minister Patra stated during his address to the gathered crowd.

"This solar plant is not just an energy project; it is a beacon of local employment, district development, and Odisha’s progress. Today, we mark the beginning of a journey towards renewable energy and regional prosperity," said Minister Patra.

Project Details

The proposed solar energy plant will span 595 acres and is designed to produce an impressive 6 GW of solar power, alongside manufacturing solar panels, modules, and related equipment. The plant is expected to directly employ around 14,000 individuals, making it a significant employment generator for the region.

Speaking at the event, Hitesh Mehta, Director of Waaree Energies, announced that the plant is expected to commence production within the next nine months.

The venture is the result of a strategic agreement signed between Waaree Energies and the Odisha Government in September 2022. Officials believe the project will set new benchmarks in renewable energy production while driving significant socio-economic development in the area.

Local and Administrative Support

Dignitaries, including District Collector Somesh Upadhyay and Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar, were present at the event. District Collector Upadhyay emphasized the project's broader benefits, such as upgraded education, healthcare, electricity, and drinking water facilities for the region.

Residents of Neulpoi and surrounding areas expressed their enthusiasm and optimism about the plant’s establishment. Many believe it will transform the local economy and improve infrastructure.

Transforming Odisha’s Renewable Energy Landscape

Waaree Energies’ investment underscores the growing prominence of Odisha in India’s renewable energy map. Once operational, the plant will not only support the state’s energy requirements but also reduce its carbon footprint significantly.

The project is seen as a game-changer for Dhenkanal district, ensuring both environmental sustainability and socio-economic upliftment. Odisha Frontier will continue to monitor this transformative development.
