Odisha CM Majhi Slams Mamata Banerjee's "Objectionable" Remarks on Odisha

CM Majhi Questions Banerjee's Authority to Comment on Odisha, Calls Her Remarks Insensitive and Dangerous.

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent comments that included a comparison between the situations in West Bengal and neighboring states, such as Odisha. Majhi labeled Banerjee's remarks as "objectionable" and questioned her authority to comment on Odisha.

The Controversial Remarks

The controversy began when Mamata Banerjee addressed the recent violence that erupted in West Bengal during a BJP protest against the rape of a medical student in Kolkata. During her speech, Banerjee compared the situation in West Bengal to that of Bangladesh and mentioned neighboring states, including Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Delhi. She asserted that if Bengal were set on fire, the impact would spread to these states.

Odisha's Response

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, responding to Banerjee’s comments, took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his discontent. He shared a video clip of Banerjee's speech and directly addressed her in his post. Majhi questioned Banerjee's authority, asking, "Who gave you the right to make such objectionable comments about Odisha?"

Majhi went on to describe Odisha as a peaceful state with responsible and conscious citizens, stating that the people of Odisha would never accept Banerjee's "hateful attitude, negative comments, and insensitive mindset" towards their state.

CM Majhi's Concerns

In his post, Majhi also highlighted the seriousness of Banerjee's remarks, arguing that instead of ensuring justice for the victim of the heinous crime in Kolkata, Banerjee's comments appeared to be motivated by a vengeful attitude, which he deemed dangerous for the country. He urged Banerjee to refrain from making such divisive statements and called on her to remain calm.

Assam’s Reaction

The controversy didn't stop with Odisha. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also condemned Banerjee's remarks, questioning how she could dare to threaten Assam. Sarma warned Banerjee not to cast an "evil eye" on Assam and accused her of trying to ignite unrest across India due to her political failures. "It is unbecoming of you to use such divisive language," Sarma stated.

Broader Impact

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks have sparked widespread criticism from leaders in various states, who are calling for more responsible leadership during such sensitive times. The incident has further fueled political tensions between the states, with leaders like Majhi and Sarma taking a firm stance against what they perceive as inflammatory and irresponsible rhetoric from Banerjee.
