Gold Deposits Discovered in Odisha: Exploration Underway in Multiple Districts

Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Deogarh Among Key Locations Identified for Gold Mining Potential.

 

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : In a significant development for Odisha's mineral wealth, the state has uncovered potential gold deposits across several districts. The discovery is seen as a major boost to the state's economy, with various regions identified for further exploration and potential mining activities.

Gold Discovered in Keonjhar District

Among the most promising finds is the discovery of gold in the Gopur-Gajipur area of Keonjhar district. The region, long suspected of harboring mineral wealth, is now undergoing intensive exploration. The identification process is in full swing, with significant efforts focused on the areas of Mankadchua, Saleikona, and Dimirimunda.

According to Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, the discovery in Keonjhar could lead to significant economic benefits for the state. The Minister disclosed this information in response to an unstarred question raised by Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati during a recent assembly session.

Mayurbhanj District: Another Hotspot for Gold Exploration

Meanwhile, Mayurbhanj district has also emerged as a potential hotspot for gold mining. Areas such as Jashipur, Suriaguda, Ruaansi, Idelkuja, Maredihi, Suleipat, and Badampahad are currently under exploration. The ongoing search for gold in these regions could potentially reveal substantial deposits.

Scattered Gold Deposits Reported in Multiple Districts

Information about scattered gold deposits has also been received from various other districts, including Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Angul, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sambalpur, and Boudh. While these reports are still preliminary, the potential for gold mining in these areas cannot be overlooked. The government has noted that exploration in these regions has not yet been conducted on a large scale.

Significant Discovery in Deogarh District

One of the more advanced explorations is taking place in the Rampalli area of Deogarh district. Here, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has already identified gold deposits during a G-2 level survey. Geological assessments indicate that the region could hold significant amounts of gold, and preparations are currently underway to auction this mineral block for further development.

Challenges and Future Plans

While these discoveries are promising, the state government has indicated that more work needs to be done before mining activities can commence. In Keonjhar, for example, further assessments are required to determine the exact quantity and quality of the gold deposits. Until these assessments are complete, the government has no immediate plans to start extraction operations.

Similarly, in areas like Mankadchua, Saleikona, and Dimirimunda, the Odisha Mining Corporation is carrying out G-4 and G-3 level explorations. These studies are crucial for accurately identifying the locations and potential yield of the gold deposits.

No Immediate Plans for Gold Processing Units

Despite the positive findings, the government has stated that there are currently no plans to establish a processing unit for gold extraction in the state. This decision may change as exploration progresses and more detailed information about the deposits becomes available.

The discovery of gold in Odisha is a developing story that could have far-reaching implications for the state's economy. As exploration continues, more details are expected to emerge, offering a clearer picture of the potential benefits and challenges associated with gold mining in the region.
