Odisha braces for a week of rain with heavy downpours in 9 districts; low-pressure areas prompt yellow warnings; below-normal monsoon rains.
Bhubaneswar, Odisha : The Regional Meteorological Center in Bhubaneswar has forecasted significant weather changes for Odisha over the coming week. Following the formation of a low-pressure area in the west-central Bay of Bengal near the south Odisha coast last Monday, another low-pressure area is expected to develop on the 19th of this month. As a result, Odisha is anticipated to experience rainfall over the next seven days.
A yellow warning has been issued for six districts today, highlighting the potential for heavy rainfall. The affected districts include Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Koraput. The forecast indicates that many areas will witness light to moderate rain, with the possibility of heavy downpours in specific locations.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, the same six districts, along with Nabarangpur, Puri, and Nayagarh, are expected to experience heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department has further predicted an increase in rainfall in some districts on the 19th.
In the current monsoon season, Odisha has received 26% less rainfall than the normal average. Malkangiri district has recorded the highest rainfall, while eleven districts have received average rainfall. Conversely, Mayurbhanj district has seen the least rainfall, and seventeen districts have recorded below-normal precipitation levels, as per the Meteorological Department's records.
The lack of adequate rainfall has delayed agricultural activities in many regions, even as the month of Ashadha comes to an end. The forecast for the 18th includes potential rain in various parts of the state, with heavy rainfall likely in some areas. Specifically, the Meteorological Center has predicted heavy rainfall in Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, and Nabarangpur districts.
Farmers and residents in these areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions in anticipation of the heavy rains. The weather conditions are being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
