In a recent development, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert for Odisha as a low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. This atmospheric disturbance is advancing in a northwesterly direction and is poised to impact the state significantly.

Depression to Cross Odisha Coast Near Puri on Saturday Morning

The depression is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri on Saturday morning. As a result, the state is bracing for continuous and widespread rainfall, which is anticipated to persist until 23rd July.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Multiple Districts

According to the forecast, heavy rainfall is expected on 21st July in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, and Bargarh. The intensity of the rain is likely to increase, affecting more areas on 22nd July. 

The districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal are predicted to experience severe downpours.

Continuous Rainfall to Persist Until 23rd July

The Meteorological Department has indicated that the rainfall will continue unabated on 23rd July, with the potential for further intensification. In light of this forecast, the Special Relief Commissioner has issued directives to all district collectors to be on high alert and ensure preparedness for any eventualities.

Preparations Underway in Anticipation of Severe Weather

District collectors in regions expected to receive heavy rainfall have been urged to undertake proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather. Areas under an orange warning are particularly vulnerable, with low-lying regions at risk of waterlogging. The likelihood of damage to kutcha roads and houses has also been highlighted, necessitating vigilant monitoring and timely intervention.

Further Cyclonic Activity Predicted

In a significant forecast by Dr. Sarat Sahu, Director of the Centre for Environmental Conservation (CEC), another cyclonic circulation is expected to form over northern Odisha and Jharkhand on 23rd July. This development could sustain the low-pressure system until 26th July, bringing with it the potential for continued heavy to very heavy rainfall.

River Basins on High Alert

The river basins of Mahanadi, Baitarani, Brahmani, Budhabalanga, and Subarnarekha are on high alert as the impending weather conditions could lead to significant water level rises. The state is advised to remain vigilant and prepared for the adverse weather, which is expected to persist until the upcoming Friday.
